QT – Romans 9

Vs. 14, “What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!”  Whew…this is a very difficult passage to digest because it really forces us to ask questions that are not easy to answer.  In the context, Paul is referring to Israel as God’s chosen…They were elected to be first so to speak.  That came with many privileges and responsibility.  But many of them failed and tried to attain righteousness by good works.  It wasn’t that the Gentile nations were snubbed by God….if God were truly just, all of us would be condemned to hell.   It is impossible to fully understand the ways of God and we are foolish to even begin to try.  Please be very careful with your presumptions with God….it’s a dangerous road to go down.

Regarding application…Merciful God.  Vs. 16, “It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.”  Sometimes lost in all of these questions regarding God’s justice and fairness is God’s mercy.  I can’t completely wrap my mind around why some nations and people have deliberately rejected God or understand how people will go to hell.  But I do know is what God’s word tells me….God is merciful.  The naysayers will poke fun at our child like faith and will call us mental midgets.  Instead of questioning God for who are we to question our Creator (vs. 20)…it’s time to exercise our faith in our God of mercy!
