Vs. 26, “From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.” As we continue traveling with Paul on his second missionary journey, we see him in three different cities, and we see three different reactions to the Gospel. In Thessalonica, though some turned to the Lord, the overall response was opposition to Paul because of jealousy from the Jews. As they traveled to Berea, we see a different response. In Berea the people there opened their hearts to Scripture and received the Word. Paul left Timothy & Silas behind to go on to Athens. Athens was the center of religion & culture. Athens is known for its philosphers and Paul took advantage of that by going to discuss God with them. They began to mock Paul & the Gospel, but Paul stood strong & eloquently presented the truth!
Regarding application…Enemy Always Near. Vs. 13, “When the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, they went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up.” Note…while the Christians from Thessalonica were busy sending out the Gospel…Satan was busy stirring up trouble! In essence…Satan was sending out his own “missionaries” to Berea. We have to be very mindful of always being cognizant of how the enemy lurks about. When the preaching of God’s word and the power of the Gospel are at hand…Satan will always try relentlessly to interfere.
