Vs. 25, “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” Isnt’t this an incredible ending to the Gospel’s? We enter a scene where some of the disciples are fishing…and Jesus would you this opportunity to open Peter’s heart. It’s fitting that Jesus would find Peter fishing…and perhaps that would remind Peter how Jesus would say he would become a fisher of men. Remember, Peter still had to be feeling great shame for his denial of Christ three times…now Jesus would use this to reinstate Peter and let him know that He still will use him mightely.
Regarding application…Do You Love Jesus? Vs. 17, “The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me.” Jesus would ask Peter three times…signifying the three times Peter denied him. Of course, when we say we love Jesus it is a wonderful thing…but saying it needs to be backed up by doing it. Question: How do we love Jesus? Of course, the obligatory answers…prayer, QT’s, worship, going to church, etc all fall in that realm of answers….but Jesus’ answer to Peter was to “feed my sheep.” You see…when we love Jesus…Jesus in turn wants us to love others. It’s that simple…though our minds can comprehend it…it’s our hearts that are a bit slow. Let us never forget that while we may be fisherman, tax collecters, tentmakers, teachers, lawyers, doctors, etc…Jesus has a far bigger mission for us all…to take care of and help feed the church and remain in Him!
