Vs. 35, “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” The fourth miracle in the feeding of the 5000 shows us that Jesus is the true bread of life. Far better than any loaves or fishes, manna or your favorite food! You all know that old “Snicker’s candy bars satisfy…”…when Jesus’ bread of life satisfies the soul. The feeding was so satisfying that people crossed over the sea to Capernaum with Jesus! Yet, Jesus knew how shallow their hearts were…for they would continue to demand a sign (vs. 30). But Jesus would remind us…that unlike manna from Heaven, Jesus was the sign! Jesus would go on to inform them that God seeks after them, for Jesus would come to seek and save the lost…this is what this Passion week is all about!
Regarding application…Revealed Hearts. Vs. 66, “From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.” What an incredibly poignant moment in the ministry of our Lord! Jesus would sift out the pretenders. Many came to satisfy their minds & bodies, but few would come to satisfy their souls. When Jesus challenged the fickle crowd that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood (Vs. 53)…It was not literal but figurative. To partake in what Christ challenged them was to accept His Word unconditionally and accept the sacrifice of Jesus’ body & blood that forgave us of our sins. I often try to remind the YG members of this passage for it reveals that many follow Christ for the wrong reasons. Jesus was not about popularity and numbers…yet I fear many churches today get caught up in this very thing. Yes, we are here to share the “Good News” and bring many to Christ. Yet, I think we get caught up in “accommodating” the world too miuch…and forget that a successful church is not numbers, rather those whose hearts truly desire Christ. We are not entertainers and “feel good” churches…we are here to build up the body and save the lost. I have heard of churches offering to give youth free dinners and prizes if they come to church!!! Let us be people who hear the message Christ is saying and follow Him for the right reason!
