Vs. 12, “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” Wow…what a wonderful example Jesus sets for all of us! In this chapter, we Jesus shows us His many different ways. Jesus is our ruler, even over the Sabbath (vs. 1-5), Jesus is our healer (vs. 6-11), Jesus is our master (vs. 12-16) and lastly, Jesus is our preacher (vs. 17-49). Luke would give us rendition of the Sermon on the Mount in this chapter.
Regarding application…Are You Good? Vs. 45, “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” One of the tests we can do to determine if we are “good” people is our actions (deed & word). If I had an opportunity to sit down with ten people who knew you at school or work…what would they say about you? What would they about me if the table was turned? It’s a pretty convicting thought…our “real” side could show up. What do we store up in our hearts? Selfish things (recognition, money, popularity, gossip, bitterness, anger, etc.) or Selfless things (humility, thankfulness, serving, church, encouragement, etc.) While we all are sinners, we choose daily if we are going to live a “good” life. I pray that each of us would soften our hearts so that Jesus’ goodness can fill the empty spaces and drive out the selfish spaces!
