Vs. 16, “John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Luke gives us the historical background of when John the Baptist started his ministry. John would preach a message of repentance and baptize people in preperation of the coming Messiah. Remember, water baptism was a practice done in the Old Testament as a symbolism of cleansing…but Jesus would baptize us with the Holy Spirit! John was a polarizing figure and definitely did not curb his enthusiasm for sinners to turn & repent (vs. 9). We also are given another genealogy…but this one was Mary’s genealogy compared to Joseph’s genealogy from the book of Matthew. We are also reminded how pleased God was with His Son after Jesus was baptized by John!
Regarding application…Producing Fruit. Vs. 8, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.” When we humble ourselves before God and realize our failures…it is then that we put our repetance and reliance upon Him. When the soil of our hearts grow God’s seed (His Word)…we will produce a tree with fruit in our lives. Remember, when Jesus’ disciples asked Him how would they know true Christians…Jesus would state…you will know them by the fruit they produce. Question: Are you producing fruit? We are given an example of what that fruit is from Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Pick one today and produce it in your life!
