Vs. 5, “While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him.” Earlier today we sang the song “Voice of Truth” and indeed we must listen to Him! We’ve heard these words spoken before at Jesus’ baptism. In the transfiguration we get a glimpse of the coming kingdom and perhaps a time for Jesus to be encouraged as He was about to make the ultimate sacrifice. We are also reminded in this passage of the reality of the sin filled world we live in. We cannot always stay up in the mountain, we must descend into the valley. We also see the humility of Jesus as he did not even have enough money to pay the temple tax (vs. 22-27).
Regarding application…Do Not Fear. Vs. 7, “But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” As we begin the new year of 2010, I feel like Jesus is telling us the same thing. Don’t be afraid about the future. There are unknown roads ahead, obstacles to face and fears to conquer. But Jesus touches us like He touched the disciples. My church down here in Corona, CA is facing a new fear in moving to a new building. There are fears of making the wrong decision to move, fears of financial difficulties, fears of retaining and growing the congregation…but Jesus comforts us in this passage. Take comfort brothers & sisters and turn to His promises daily!
